16 days campaign’2018 to Stop Violence against Women

The Gonogobeshona Forum, Adolescent Forum, Student Forum and NJK   Organized 16 days campaign from 25th  November to 10thDecember’ 2018 to Stop  violence against women. The campaign already covered 3 unions – Laxmichap, Palashbari and Khokshabari covering 20 villages and Sadar Niplhamari project areas of PGELKPI project of USS Supported by Diakonia.  They are   selected 5 main topics for the campaign.

  1. Stop Child marriage
  2. Stop Dowry
  3. Stop Domestic violence
  4. Woman’s rights on land and properties.
  5. Awareness on Health and hygiene.

The campaign included 5 distinct activities. Activities are -

  • Rally and Human chain: The rallies and Human chain marched through the main roads of the Pourosova, union including the markets, schools and nearby households. People willingly participated in the rallies. This includes UP members, honorable local people, teachers, students and  project stakeholders..
  • Seminars and related discussions: The discussions were engaging as the union parishad members, honorable local people,Teachers,Students, project stakeholders, Adolescent Forum members, Gonogobeshona Forum members and the husbands of the female stakeholders participated in the activity.
  • Honorable mentions: Married couples who have successfully established women rights and equity in their home and properties were honored in the stage.
  • Songs: Inspirational thought provoking songs were played in order to raise people’s awareness. These songs were written and performed by the Adolescent Forum members.
  • Games and Sports: There were friendly sports competitions among the participants of the campaign. The women and adolescents participated in games like Pillow Pass, Throw the ball, Needle and Thread etc. Prizes were given to the winners.

Pre work:The forum members and NJK members  worked heart and soul in order to make the campaign  to stop  violence against women successful. They had frequent meetings for it. They had to communicate with the local government and other partners. They made the posters, the festoons, speech and the songs for performed in the campaign.

Success: The success of the campaign will be visible by the examples that the villagers are preventing child marriage, not taking/giving dowry, not tolerating domestic violence and exercising equity in land and properties. We have seen examples of these acts in recent past. The local people are eager for these positive changes and thanked the organizers for such initiatives.
