Women led emergency response of flood affected sponsor families under LRP-52

The overall flood situation in Kurigram district have deteriorated further due to the rise of river water, cutting off road communications at places, and leaving thousands of people marooned and hungry.Flood situation in Kurigram deteriorated today as water of all the rivers in the region including the Brahmaputra and Dharla has been flowing above danger level. Noted that national and international about 20 rivers are flowing the district. Most of the rivers come from India. Overall flood situation are same for 9 upazila. One of them is PhulbariUpazila, it is also in USS working area. In Kurigram,the Dharla River is flowing 63 to 85 cm above the danger level. This means, the situation won't improve overnight. House pattern of these localities are low standard and they don’t consider the upcoming flood. As per their house pattern normally they become affected by flood. As per discussion with community people they don’t increase the house level due to consider the financial crisis. Noted that there are three big rivers flowing in the PhulbariUpazila, Named Dharla, Baromasi, Dudkur. In this year flood started in 9th July 2020 to31ist July 2020.As per our survey, most highly affected communities are Chorboroloi, Dhoniram, Khaser chore under Borovita union. Jotindranarayan ,Fakirpara, Sonaikazi. Tumtumir char under the Shimulbari union.In this circumstances USS already prepared the Rapid Need Assessment (RNA) and send to respective partner of Action Aid Bangladesh (AAB) .As a result AAB approved the humanitarian response among 370 sponsor families amount of 2000 ( two thousand) per families. This amount have distributed on 29th and 30th July 2020. Total distributed amount of Tk 740000(Seven laces forty thousand) only.

Objectives of emergency response flood affected sponsor families

  • To provide cash support to targeted sponsor families to reduce the economical and mental vulnerabilities.
  • To provide awareness message through reflection action circle and social media on Upcoming flood & their effect for the poor families.

Description of the Event:  After getting the final commitment from Action Aid Bangladesh, we organized the orientation and meeting with staffs and women leaders. We came to agree some issues which are right holder selection process and response planning and communication with government official.

 Our beneficiary selection criteria are below to;

  • 100% sponsor families.
  •  Divorcee and women headed are mostly vulnerable.
  •  Pregnant and lactating mothers.
  • Person with disability women and youth.
  •  Economically affected by flood.
  • Avoided duplication with others organization such as MJSKS and others NGOs.

As per discussion with the criteria we had taken decision about the beneficiary selection through participatory selection process using women led communication matrix (WLCM). As per considering the local context women led emergency response team developed the format and collected some information according to the consideration of the need of the assessment. Emergency response team formed two type of committee one is union committee and another is center committee. They are fully responsible to distribution process. USS was playing the role as a facilitator.
